Oracle Hosting: The Top Ten Do and Don'ts

Do:

•1.     Use an Oracle specialist
Oracle is a significant investment & usually at the heart of your most critical applications. An experienced, specialist Oracle Platinum Partner will allow to you leverage far more value from your investment than a generalist hosting company.

•2.     Ensure Oracle upgrade paths are fully understood
Knowing the potential costs to scale your Oracle hosting solution helps prevent surprises and hidden costs. If you need to upgrade or migrate your Oracle databases, will your hosting partner understand the implications?

•3.     Make sure you're licensed properly
Oracle licensing is notoriously complex & a mistake can prove costly. If you're being assured that the platform is correctly licensed then make sure you get it in writing. Working with an Oracle specialist could save you time and costs in this area.

Don't:

•1.     Have too many links in your Oracle support chain
Multiple partners mean more risk and greater exposure, with lengthened projects and degraded support. Select an Oracle partner who can provide as much of the 'support stack' as possible in-house to reduce TCO and improve delivery.

•2.     Assume 24x7 support includes 24x7 Oracle support
Often datacentres provide 24x7 manned security & this can be mistaken for 24x7 support. Waiting until Monday morning for an Oracle database issue to be resolved is unacceptable; make sure monitoring & management is at the heart of your service.

•3.     Assume 'Oracle support' covers 'Oracle development'
Hosted Oracle applications often require customisation & integration consultancy to maximise their effectiveness. Work with provider who can demonstrate a track history of Oracle development projects across a range of verticals. Their experience will prove invaluable
