Choosing An On Demand CRM Solution: It’s More Than A Product Decision

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 23:52

If you’re considering an on demand CRM solution, you’ll know that that there are a host of vendors out there to choose from. But rather than just comparing products on a feature-by-feature basis, I highly encourage evaluators to think at a more strategic level and consider not only the product, but also how the vendor fits in with your organization’s immediate and long-term goals.

Just a few things to consider:
- Does this vendor offer a roadmap of solutions and services to help your organization grow and react to changing business demands?
- Is there a strategy as to how this vendor’s CRM solution will coexist and integrate with other enterprise applications your organization depends upon?
- Does a relationship with this vendor bring value to your overall business?

Metcash Upgrades its Data Warehouse to Oracle Database 11g

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 21:57

Australian retail distributor Metcash, owner of IGA distribution and IGA Fresh, discusses its upgrade to Oracle Database 11g earlier this year with ZDNet Australia.

Metcash highlights some of the benefits it realized from its upgrade, including reducing batch report production time, cutting out the use of Excel spreadsheets, and the ability to store more data online. It also realized other performance benefits from query caching, which helped avoid duplicating retrieval as well as the ability to make structural changes to the database without having to rebuild the "materialised database view aggregate" — a process that used to take 24 hours.

Shrinkage

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 21:28

In the retail industry shrinkage refers to the loss of product, usually from theft. (If you're a Seinfeld fan, then the term means something entirely different.) In recent years, organized crime has found that retailers are easy targets, and online auction sites tend to make it easy to unload stolen merchandise. In my home state of Texas, its estimated that we loose $77 million in state sales tax, and that number doesn't include local sales tax. No wonder they rarely mow the medians -- there's no tax revenue for road maintenance!

These organized groups tend to find a method that works, then repeat it across lots of chains. This adds up to around $30 billion a year in stolen merchandise. Working alone, each retailer is often out-manned, but retailers that normally compete are now working together to share valuable crime patterns. And by building their cases together, they tend to garner more attention from local police.

"We see a lot of people who had been in the business of dealing drugs but who find out they can make more money in stolen retail property trade with a lot less chance of being sent to prison," said Frank Muscato, Walgreen's organized retail crime coordinator. Just keep the take under $1500 and the crime is classified as a misdemeanor in most states. That beats the heck out of selling drugs.

The NRF Loss Prevention Conference & EXPO is being held June 15–17 in Los Angeles this year. Its a chance for retailers to hear about these problems and solutions.

I for one don't want to pay higher prices to support a thief, so if retailers need to curb my shopping experience a bit, I'm for it.

Now Is the Time to Innovate—and SOA Can Help

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 21:24

"The best companies use economic downturns as a time to innovate and make strategic investments," says Maneesh Joshi, a senior group manager, product marketing for SOA at Oracle. As evidence, Joshi cites a recent long-term study by analysts at McKinsey & Company called Managing IT in a Downturn. "In a downturn, conventional wisdom suggests cutting costs and reducing expenses while compromising on innovation," says Joshi. "But conventional wisdom is wrong."

The McKinsey & Company study, which tracked nearly a thousand industrial companies over 20 years, found that industry leaders and successful challengers increased spending on mergers and R&D during economic downturns. "These successful companies dialed up their volume on strategic spending during recessionary times," says Joshi. "They maintained their appetite for innovation and even dug into their cash reserves to act while others were not. They had a much greater chance of emerging successful and maintaining a leadership position or seizing it from competition during the successive expansionary period."

Innovate with SOA
According to Joshi, now is a great time to introduce or expand your service-oriented architecture. "SOA gives you a more flexible infrastructure that makes your business more agile today and adaptable to growth opportunities in the future."

A smart SOA road map, says Joshi, leverages quick returns on highly visible projects to free up budget and support for longer-term projects. "Prioritize your SOA road map," he advises. "Focus first on a small yet important process that is critical to your business or cash flows. Use SOA to fix this process that has high visibility and is infamous for its inefficiency," he adds. "By showing savings and benefits on a visible project, you can catch management's attention and use it to make the case to grow your SOA initiative. It is extremely important to pick a process that is manageable and improves your chances of success. You are going to get one chance and you certainly do not want to bite off more than you can chew."

Think Long Term
"Be sure to focus on short-term progress, like three months or six months out, but do not lose sight of longer term value and goals," says Joshi. "With SOA, you can generate savings and create incremental opportunities that far surpass what you would have achieved from cost reductions alone. The 20-year McKinsey & Company study makes it pretty clear that the big opportunity is right now."

Oracle Reports Conversion Followup

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 20:26

I wrote about a gotcha in the Oracle Reports to BIP conversion libraries last week. Not long after that, 'friend of BIP', IceMan aka Ike Wiggins, self confessed 'lazy man', read the article to realize this is not a bad trait :0) dropped me a not
e to say that he had developed a tool to aid in the process of converting a batch of Oracle Reports.

So, if you are starting to convert your 600 Oracle Reports and find the whole thing a little daunting. Never fear, IceMan is here. Get on over to Ike's blog entry, check out his dulcet tones on the video he recorded and then down load the converter client and you'll be 'off to the races' in no time.

While you are there, check out the BI Publisher IDE that Ike has developed. If you are working with the BIP APIs or want a one click, load test and generate tool for BIP, Ike has just what you need.

Where do I learn more about Agile PLM Service Packs 9.2.2.5 and 9.2.2.6?

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 17:00

Since the release of Agile PLM 9.2.2.4, there have been two service packs - 9.2.2.5 and 9.2.2.6. Prior to the Oracle acquisition of Agile, Agile would add new features in each service pack (SP). This led to some confusion about which features are available within each service pack. After Agile PLM 9.2.2.4, service packs under Oracle comply with Oracle policy to be defect only. There are no new features in 9.2.2.5 and 9.2.2.6. This policy enables our customers to apply SPs more easily without user disruption and with lower risk.

Modernize the IT Infrastructure - a real look

Oracle - 12 May, 2009 - 13:52

Hey Guys:
I like to post case study's that we've done with our customers and partners to keep the information flowing about the reality of modernization. Often, when we talk with customers, it is viewed as a bit of a science experiment. It is being done all the time on a grand scale.

Government/Public Sector is a place that is keeping me quite busy these days. The following a is great webcast and white paper that my boss (Lance Knowlton, VP of Modernization) did with Forrester and Accenture recently.

It is important to keep the reality check going and see that modernizatin is going on all the time, and in the big enterprise. It's is why I'm on a plane every week helping customers get to where they need to go!

So, check out the following white paper and web cast. Good stuff.

White Paper http://www.computerworld.com/action/whitepapers.do?command=viewWhitePaperDetail&contentId=9132285

Here is the White Paper Abstract:
As IT budgets are slashed, IT management pressures rise and legacy systems linger in government organizations, modernizing the IT infrastructure and applications has never been so important. Find out how government IT organizations can modernize IT to become more efficient and offer better services to the public while keeping upgrade costs low.

I've been working quite a bit of Sybase, SQL Server and Adabas Natural migration lately, so we can talk a bit about those in the next blogs.

Oracle Press Release - 12 May, 2009 - 12:01
Oracle Press Release Infosys Technologies and Oracle Help Weatherford International Ltd. to Transform its OperationsCompany Standardizes Human Capital Management Processes across Global Operations in 100 Countries in 18 Months Redwood Shores, CA - May 12, 2009 News Facts Infosys Technologies Limited (NASDAQ: INFY) and Oracle today announced the completion of the implementation of a global human capital management (HCM) system, based on Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise, at Weatherford International Ltd. (NYSE: WFT). This program has effectively transformed the company’s processes by streamlining its HCM operations and reducing administration costs while enabling it to accelerate business decisions. Weatherford, one of the largest global providers of innovative mechanical solutions, technology and services for the drilling and production sectors of the oil and gas industry, launched the program as part of “One Weatherford,” a vision aimed at doubling the company’s size within the next four years. Over a period of 18 months, Weatherford and Infosys partnered together to consolidate, standardize and automate processes across 800 service bases around the world. Weatherford chose Infosys as its implementation partner based on its enterprise software expertise, business consulting and technology leadership. The companies collaborated to re-engineer many key HR processes that would leverage Weatherford’s competitive advantages in oilfield operations. As a result, Weatherford’s corporate and regional HR groups were able to provide their insight into HR practices in the respective countries to enhance the effectiveness of the programSupporting Quotes “The key to success in this program was leveraging the operational and global human resources expertise of our HR team, and combining this with the global implementation experience of Infosys,” said Neal Gillenwater, Vice President of Human Resources for Weatherford. “From defining global processes to engineering and implementing the HCM solution, Infosys has partnered with us to adopt best practices and transform successfully.” “This large and complex project is successful because of the executive commitment from Weatherford, the combined knowledge of both Weatherford and Infosys, and support from the leading HCM vendor, Oracle” said Prasad Thrikutam, Senior Vice President and Head of Energy, Utilities and Services at Infosys Technologies. “Thanks to this combined effort, Weatherford may now leverage the single view of operations to achieve deeper relationships with both clients and employees.” “Weatherford’s impressive cost and time savings due to the implementation of PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capital Management demonstrates the value of the PeopleSoft solution for companies with geographically and operationally diverse operations,” said Paco Aubrejuan, Oracle Vice President, PeopleSoft Enterprise. “PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capital Management has the ability to significantly decrease operational costs associated with both core human resources processes and talent management programs, especially when implemented by a seasoned, strategic partner such as Infosys."
