Trade Shows in Free Fall - Gartner cancels 'flagship' tech conferences
Research firm cuts Spring Symposium/ITxpo in Las Vegas and Barcelona
January 13, 2009 (Computerworld)
In another bad sign of health for the IT industry, Gartner Inc. is canceling two of its biggest technology conferences because of the recession.
The research and consulting firm is canceling its spring Symposium/ITxpo in Las Vegas and Barcelona.
Both scheduled in May, the conferences highlighted emerging technology trends, were attended by IT managers and CIOs, and featured a star-studded list of IT speakers and Gartner analysts.
The Symposium/ITxpo, called the "flagship" on Gartner's Web site, also stood out for often generating news. For instance, at last year's event, Gartner analysts warned that Windows was "collapsing" under its own bloated codebase, and that Microsoft Corp. needed to make radical overhauls.
In recent months there have been a number of high profile trade show and special event cancellations and this is expected to continue well into 2010 and beyond. With customers and providers increasingly reluctant to commit funds to costly in-person events this looks set to be another difficult year for the traditional event organisers and another driver for Web and Enterprise 2.0 technologies.
